The investigation was performed for nurses of 14 major hospitals in Yamagata Prefecture by using our original questionnaire including general attribute, workplace circumstances, educational career, actual exposure experience, the practice of barrier protection, and the image analysis for anti-cancer drugs. Available answers from 321 nurses were obtained (response rate 57.8%) and analyzed as follow: 41.4% of the respondents had the exposure experience, especially in the preparation or exchange of their intravenous administration. Fifty-seven percent of the respondents were engaged in mixing of anti-cancer drugs. Twenty percent answered a handling manual was not fully equipped. Even if the manual was ready, the 20% were not checking the contents of them. Concerning the barrier protection, inconsistent wearing of double glove, goggles and cap were demonstrated. Imperfect treatment of excrement and linen were shown as well. The image analysis suggested the difference in image against the anti-cancer drugs between the respondents having exposure experience or not. The present investigation suggested nurses might have the potential risk of the occupational exposure with anti-cancer drugs in Yamagata Prefecture because of their incomplete management and further investigation should be required to improve them.
