A questionnaire was distributed to 238 parents and guardians of children in schools for special needs education, and 111 responses were analyzed. The behaviors that troubled parents and guardians most were “touching genitals” and “public masturbation”, while parents of menstruating girls found that dealing with menstruation was problematic. Regardless of the child’s age (elementary, junior high or senior high), a majority of parents considered “appearance”, “communication” and “selfprotection” to be necessary aspects of sex education for their own children. These were the same aspects as parents taught at home, and were the  aspects they wanted schools to teach. A large number of parents felt that they “don’ t know what to teach” and “are confused” . The most popular person to consult concerning sex education among parents was “the school teacher”, with 73 parents choosing this option. There is a necessity for parents and guardians to work in collaboration with schools to examine content and methods of sex education necessary for students with intellectual disabilities to achieve social independence.
